The Mission & Vision Statements

The mission of the King Elementary School Counseling department is to empower scholars to achieve academic, professional, and personal goals by providing equitable access and experiences that build skills in literacy, creativity, critical thinking, and collaboration.

The vision of the King Elementary School Counseling department is to prepare ALL graduates to have the skills to pursue and accomplish college, post-secondary training, and/or career opportunities in order to live and compete successfully in a global society while being socially and emotionally healthy.

The Role of A School Counselor

School Counselors support all students in grades PreK-12 with academic achievement, social and emotional development and career planning.

A school counselor’s work is multifaceted. We guide, teach, encourage, and lead as needed. Sometimes you’ll find us with a student in an individual counseling session, or teaching a classroom lesson about emotional literacy, communication skills, or conflict management. Taking a “whole child” approach and addressing overall wellness, we recognize the significance, benefit, and advantage to maintaining a healthy balance between each of these domains.

How To Make A Referral To The Counselors

Students can see the counselors in any of the following ways:

Counseling Services

Classroom Guidance Lessons

Our school counselors visit each classroom multiple times throughout the school year and have the chance to interact with every student during these lessons.  Lessons typically last 30 minutes in length and cover topics such as academic achievement, emotional regulation, problem solving skills, friendship skills, career development, and organization skills.

Small Group Counseling

Our school counseling department offer variety of small groups to students who may benefit from spending some extra time developing academic, social, or emotional skills along with their peers, and to students who are coping with similar life situations.  Groups are offered based on the current needs of students.  Groups can have anywhere from 3-6 members and usually meet once a week for several weeks during lunch.

Individual Counseling

Our school counselors provide individual counseling to students to help them to develop their problem solving skills in the areas of career development, academic achievement, social, or emotional challenges.  Regular sessions can last from 3 to 8 weeks and are solution-focused.  For intense counseling, we extend the opportunity of community based referrals.
